In this study, the authors investigated the adverse effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on intestinal epithelium. The Axion BioSystems Exact FL was used to assess the proliferation of human colon carcinoma and normal intestinal epithelial cells treated with different concentrations of PS-NPs. The results of the study indicate that PS-NPs affect the growth and survival of intestinal epithelial cells by impairing an autophagic flux and inducing an autophagic response.
