In this study, scientists use Axion’s Maestro MEA platform, and other methods, to explore the role of microglia-secreted proinflammatory cytokines on retinal ganglion cell development. MEA findings demonstrated that microglia-secreted cytokines induced increased neurite outgrowth and hyperexcitability, an effect that was neutralized by antibody or rapamycin treatment, suggesting the involvement of the mTOR pathway. Taken together with other findings, the authors conclude that their results demonstrate “ex vivo evidence that proinflammatory cytokines may play an important role in the morphological and physiological maturation of hRGCs, which may be recapitulated for regeneration.”
