Ready-to-Use Text for Grant Proposals

Axion BioSystems’ Maestro MEA, Maestro Z, and Omni systems have been successfully included in a range of funded proposals worldwide. Standardized language helps you present your research tools with clarity and consistency, making your applications easier to prepare.

The following descriptions may be adapted for use in grant applications to describe Axion BioSystems platforms.

Maestro MEA (Multielectrode Array System)

Maestro MEA (Axion BioSystems) enables real-time, label-free recording of extracellular electrophysiological activity from neurons, cardiomyocytes, and other electrically active cells. The system uses embedded microelectrode arrays to non-invasively monitor action potentials and network activity over time.

The Maestro platform supports a wide range of applications, including disease modeling, drug discovery, neurotoxicity screening, and cardiotoxicity assessments using patient-derived iPSC cells. The integrated software provides automated spike detection, burst analysis, and network metrics.

Axion BioSystems provides comprehensive support, including training, technical consultation, software updates, and preventative maintenance. Technical specifications and published validation studies are available to include with grant submissions.

Maestro Z (Impedance-Based Cell Analysis)

The Maestro Z platform (Axion BioSystems) offers noninvasive, label-free measurement of cellular impedance to assess cell health, proliferation, cytotoxicity, barrier function, and cell attachment dynamics. Unlike endpoint assays, the Maestro Z enables continuous, real-time monitoring without requiring labels or dyes.

This platform is ideal for evaluating compound effects on epithelial or endothelial cell monolayers, monitoring tight junction integrity (e.g., TEER assays), and studying cell growth dynamics under various treatment conditions.

The system is well-suited for toxicology, oncology, immunotherapy, and infectious disease research. Axion provides user training, validated protocols, and support materials for grant applications, including technical documentation and budget justification.

Omni Live-Cell Imaging

The Omni platform (Axion BioSystems) offers automated, high-content imaging for longitudinal analysis of cells in virtually any culture vessel, including multiwell plates, flasks, and custom formats. In addition to label-free brightfield imaging, Omni supports multi-channel fluorescence imaging, enabling researchers to combine morphological readouts with molecular and functional markers. Whole-well scanning and time-lapse imaging allow quantitative monitoring of cell behavior with or without dyes, labels, or destructive endpoints.

Available in single-plate and high-throughput formats (Omni and Omni Pro 12), the system accommodates both 2D and 3D models, with applications such as proliferation and cytotoxicity assays, wound closure and migration, invasion assays, colony formation, and spheroid/organoid growth and morphology. Quantifiable endpoints include coverage, object count, size, growth rate, circularity, invasion distance, wound-closure rate, and fluorescence intensity.

The platform is used across diverse research areas, including oncology, immuno-oncology, regenerative medicine, veterinary health, and cosmetics, as well as non-animal safety testing workflows relevant to cosmetics. Data outputs integrate readily with common statistical and image-analysis pipelines.
