Scientists use Maestro MEA to investigate PDA-NP as a potential cardiac nanomedicine therapeutic.
Myocardial infarction often results in heart failure, and current pharmacological approaches to mitigate this outcome are limited. In this study, scientists use a multiplatform approach with human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) to investigate the potential of polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA-NP) to enhance heart function and decrease risk of heart failure after myocardial infarction. Using Axion’s noninvasive Maestro Edge multielectrode array (MEA) platform, the researchers demonstrated that PDA-NP treatment significantly increases beat rate, spike amplitude, and conduction velocity, while decreasing field potential duration and beat period irregularity in vitro. Although more research is needed, taken together with other results these findings “showed a beneficial role in PDA-NP treatment of hiPSC-CMs including improved function and maturation and thereby a positive indication of their potential role in cardiac therapeutics.”
